June 11, 2020 – The pursuit of equity has driven the work of Digitunity for decades. We believe, deep in our hearts, that everyone deserves equity, equal opportunity, and justice. Our mission is rooted in empowering all people, regardless of ethnicity, economic standing, disability, orientation, or creed, with the opportunity to reach their full potential and participate meaningfully in society. Thus, we cannot remain silent at this moment.
George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor are the latest in a long line of black and brown people unjustly killed in America. Protests in cities across the nation and around the world are sending a clear message. This is an inflection point and change needs to happen. We must do better. Individuals, communities, and institutions all must play active roles in that change.
This moment cannot be ignored. Communities of color are disproportionately impacted by violence, killed by police, living in poverty, and affected by COVID-19. Black Americans are also disproportionately on the wrong side of the digital divide. Digitunity and its 1,500 partner organizations in communities across the country are working to close that divide.
Equity in a digitally connected world is part of racial justice. This moment is a stark reminder that inequity in America runs deep. We have a long way to go and a lot of work ahead of us. The staff and Board of Directors of Digitunity stand together with and support communities of color. We see you. We hear you and you matter.
