Working to Eliminate the Technology Gap

PATINS Project

PATINS Project Refurbished Computer Program
Mission Statement
The Mission of PATINS is to provide access to technology tools and instruction on Universal Design for Learning, so every Indiana student can participate and progress within the general curriculum. The project is designed to impact both the organizational capacities of local public schools and the professional capabilities of school staff in the delivery of assistive technology services and the implementation of Universal Design for Learning Principles throughout the State of Indiana. We are a Microsoft Registered Refurbisher (MRR) through the partnership with the National Cristina Foundation (NCF), and the Aidmatrix Foundation. We are a member of the TechSoup organization, a national recognized partner for reuse and recycled computer equipment. We currently install Windows XP Professional operating systems, and Oxygen Office Professional Suite for application use.
Project Abstract
One of the many activities of the project is to create a statewide network to refurbishing technology for education. The activities of this project are carried out in partnership with the National Cristina Foundation (NCF) and EWRi, Incorporated, We have also partnered with Aidmatrix, a not-for-profit who delivers powerful solution tools to connect those who have… with those in need. Through the efforts of our staff, our community partners and corporate donors, Indiana students who are disabled, at-risk or disadvantaged can obtain access to technology tools that will enable them to have the skills to control and direct their own lives. We encourge all Indiana Corporations, State Agencies, and Residents to begin donating useful unused computer equipment to our program. We are in the process of developing an Indiana Reuse Collaborative Organization to describe the differences between recycle and reuse of usable computer related equipment to keep these technologies working instead of being dumped into landfills throughout the world.
Target Population
The population that receive our completed computer systems are Indiana students from Pre-school through K-12. They are mainly students with disabilities, at-risk, or disadvantaged. Some systems are being given directly to students on permenant bases by the schools. Some systems are kept in the class rooms for use by students and/or teachers. Teachers are in need of stand alone systems outside of the school networks that limit them from some activities. All systems go to support the students to become efficient in the operation of computers and learn what the computer system can do to support their live during school and when they graduate and move into the general population.
