10 Recommendations for Digital Equity Planning

The landmark Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act dedicates vast federal resources to expand broadband infrastructure and enable eligible households to obtain home broadband and a connected device. Millions of people will have ongoing access to high-speed internet for free or at minimal cost, truly a watershed moment for broadband access. The situation for devices, however, is very different.

As digital equity plans are being developed, devices cannot be an afterthought. Using federal funds to simply purchase computers would be short-sighted and a missed opportunity to establish lasting systems that provide a reliable, robust supply of free or low cost devices for constituents. Specialized expertise in this arena is required to develop such systems.

Digitunity is an independent, national non-profit organization dedicated to advancing digital equity through device ownership. Our methodology for building sustainable device ecosystems is in action in cities across the country. Leveraging our four decades of work and experience with procurement, supply chain, software, hardware, peripherals, distribution, support, security, and community engagement, we have developed 10 recommendations for digital equity plans.
