Mission Statement
The mission of Computers for the Blind is to open the world of information technology to persons who are blind or visually impaired by providing computer equipment, software and training. It is our hope that all with a visual impairment may experience the technology in a positive and productive manner. Specifically we want to enable: Ability to independently manage personal affairs. Access to communication with others. A learning environment where information is just a click away. Employment opportunities by developing knowledge, skills, and marketable abilities.
Project Abstract
We provide discounted refurbished computers, desktops and laptops, for the visually impaired. Donors receive a tax deduction. CFTB provides computers, to visually impaired persons. All age groups, anyone legally blind and needing assistance. To date, we have provided over 12,000 computers to visually impaired individuals. The donated computers are refurbished by volunteers. This work was formerly done by John Austin. More recently, the task has been shared by volunteers from the North Texas PC Users Group, a volunteer run organization to aid in education, and enhance the distribution of computer knowledge and information. We are giving away refurbished computers for $50 only requirement is they must but Blind, have low vision and/or a certified visual impairment. I have 1,000 computers 2023 and 2024 to distribute. In addition to finding clients to provide these significantly reduced laptops to we are trying to secure the additional laptop to be able to refurbish.

Each computer comes with QR code that can be scanned and leads our consumers to out of the box video specifically for setting up your computer as a person of the VI community. If further assistance is needed our tech support and customer service team are all a member of the VI/Blind community and are available to assist our consumers on how to use our computers and technology from a blind consumers perspective. Our Tech support also uses RIM to remote access in if need be and we offer training program to learn to use JAWS, Typio etc
